5 Ways to Get Even More from Your Home to Improve Liveability

Our homes are our shelters and our sanctuaries. We live in them, play in them, and we work in them. While we seem to stretch their limits, a few simple adjustments will not only make your home more liveable, but it will also add to its value.

These five tips will help make a big difference in the way you enjoy your home.

Declutter

We seem to own a lot of “stuff” that we don’t use and we don’t need. It takes up space to store, energy to clean or control, and also can affect our overall health. This stuff can lead to reduced energy, cluttered thinking and increased stress. Work on one room at a time and start ridding yourself of the things you no longer need. If you find it hard to let go, start by throwing out the broken items and those projects you’ve never finished. You’ll feel better straight away.

Do an energy audit

You can hire a professional to do this for you or you can do a simple energy audit for yourself. Look at your energy bills to see how much you’re using and what you’re paying. Compare prices between energy suppliers and find a better deal. Identify old appliances which guzzle the power and mark them for replacement when your budget allows. Replace halogen lights with L.E.D. lights for better light at a lower cost. Lower your thermostat by a couple of degrees and save power. Just making a few simple changes will save you money and be better for the environment.

Add plants

House plants can improve the air quality in your home. They have a natural calming effect on people and can reduce the stress we face in our everyday lives. Spider plants, dracaena and palms are great for purifying the air you breathe. Plants can easily turn a house into a home and you will definitely feel better because of them.

Add comfort to your workspace

Many of us regularly work from home, so it’s a good idea to have a dedicated office or workspace. Invest in a comfortable chair and a desk you love to work at. Decorate the space as you would any other room, with your favourite pictures on the wall, a plant or two and a visitor’s chair complete with cushions. If the space looks inviting, you’ll enjoy working there.

Make your home entrance welcoming

Your front door is one of the first things you see when you come home. Clear the path and front steps of dirt and weeds, paint the door in your favourite colour, update the lighting and add some potted plants. Not only will it add to the street appeal, but it will also make you breathe in the peace the moment you see your home.

These tips will make your home a better and more sustainable place to live and add value to the property.
