10 Rules for Upgrading Your Master Bedroom You Will Love
/Is your bedroom in need of some love? In many homes, the master bedroom is the last place to be updated as the main rooms seem to come first closely followed by upgrades to the kid’s rooms as they grow up. It’s time things changed. You deserve a beautiful space for yourselves and here are ten rules to help you create a master bedroom you’ll love.
Plan first
Before you choose your paint colour or new bedding, spend time looking through decorator magazines or online décor sites. When you see a look or an element you love, save the image and create your own design board. Think about the practical elements you will need such as a bed and storage, and then find inspiration for making them look fabulous. Once you have a theme or idea in your head, it is much easier to choose the colours and décor to fit your style.
Choose colours carefully
For most of us, restful colours work best in the bedroom. Bright reds and vibrant colours are stimulating and make it hard to sleep. Soothing colours don’t have to be boring, though. Choose an eclectic mix of colours from the same palette. For example, a range of greys can be warm and soothing. Using the same colour on all walls makes the room cosy and welcoming. If you prefer more drama, think about having a feature wall to catch the eye.
Skip the theme
Too often bedrooms are decorated along a specific theme or they have one major influence in the styling. For example, a Titanic-themed quilt with a circular lifebuoy on the windows or Japanese inspired with low bed and traditional sliding doors. It’s all a bit kitsch and you will soon be tired of it. Instead, pick your favourite elements and combine them in a quirky way. A Chinese quilt with modern prints on the wall – do it your way and you will enjoy it for years to come.
Think about your lighting
Bedside lamps are a necessity as is some form of overhead lighting. Keep it subtle to fit the mood. Don’t forget to plan lighting for your wardrobes so you can more easily find what you’re looking for.
Build in extra storage
You can never have too much storage. Beneath the bed is usually wasted space so think about adding draws or storage baskets below. Plan for what you think you need and then look for ways to add a couple more. You will be glad you did.
Choose elements which fit the scale of your room.
If you are lucky enough to have high ceilings or a large space, operate for pieces which fit the scale. Elements which are too low or too small will look out of place and ruin the classic proportions of the room.
Wall décor with pizzazz
If your room is fairly clean in styling, you can afford to go big on your wall décor. Choose something big and vibrant for a splash of drama or choose something large and sculptural in neutral colours and let the form speak for the piece.
Add texture
If you often look at those beautifully natural or monochromatic bedrooms and wonder how they work, have another look. See the different textures in the styling? The woven mat, the fluffy throw, the cushions, and the flat and the shaped elements all add depth and interest to the space.
Choose quality bedding
Imagine slipping into bed on superb sheets or stroking the satin-feel quilt cover. Imagine resting your head on brand-new pillows while you rest your body on a supportive but comfortable new mattress. You deserve quality and it will give you a good night’s rest. While the initial research may take time, the results will be priceless.
Do it your way
This is your space. Do what you want with it. Don’t change your plans because your best friend doesn’t like that mirror or your choice of colour. The master bedroom must feel right to you. In fact, toss out these ten rules if you don’t like them. Styling a room is about expressing your personality, not someone else’s. Do it your way.
We hope these rules help you put together the perfect master bedroom. If you only follow one rule, definitely make it number ten! Sweet dreams.
